2 brothers arrested in extortion bid | Delhi News – Times of India

New Delhi: Two brothers were arrested from west Delhi’s Punjabi Bagh for threatening and attempting to extort money from their friend, a boutique owner, police said. On May 13, the 35-year-old businessman received a chilling courier containing photographs of his wife and son, two empty cartridges, and a letter demanding $60,000. Alarmed, the victim filed a complaint with the police.During the investigation, a shocking revelation came to light—one of the accused was a close friend of the businessman. The accused were identified as Rohit, 35, and his younger brother Sagar, 30. Rohit graduated in 2013, while Sagar studied BCA at a private university.Police traced clues from the courier’s contents and questioned individuals connected to the businessman. Their investigation eventually pointed to Rohit, who, upon interrogation, confessed to orchestrating the extortion plot. He said he was under immense financial pressure and unable to repay a loan of Rs 80 lakh after suffering heavy losses in his artificial jewelry business. Desperate, he devised the scheme with the help of his brother.“The duo’s plan was to scare the businessman to the bone and make the threat appear as though it came from an organised gang. They gathered personal information about the businessman’s family to make the threat more convincing. To intensify the fear, they procured empty cartridges from a gun house and mailed it with the letter,” said DCP (West) Vichitra Veer.Police arrested the brothers and seized their mobile phones, a laptop, and the scooter used in the crime. Authorities are continuing to investigate whether the brothers were involved in any other extortion schemes or related criminal activities in the area.
