New Delhi: A 19-year-old youth was stabbed to death in northeast Delhi’s Gokalpuri on Monday and police arrested two people in connection with the crime. According to the cops, the alleged assailants claimed they were opposed to the suspected romantic relationship between their sister and the deceased, Himanshu alias Chiku.
Following the attack, Himanshu’s family staged a protest under the Gokalpuri flyover on Tuesday and were joined by hundreds of others demanding justice for the youngster. In response, security in the area was heightened with the deployment of the Rapid Action Force and intensification of police patrols.
Police identified the two arrested men as Shahrukh Khan, 19, and Sahil Khan, 22, both brothers and neighbours of the victim in Gokalpuri.
Ashish Mishra, DCP (North East), said police received information about the crime at 9.14pm on Monday. A team from the local police station rushed to the spot in Sanjay Colony and found that the victim had been taken to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, where he was declared dead.
According to the victim’s family, the two brothers had threatened and assaulted Himanshu earlier that day. “My son was at home in the evening when the girl’s brothers and their mother came to our house and warned Himanshu to stay away from her. This wasn’t the first time their family threatened my son,” mother Laxmi said. “Later, they said they wanted to talk to him and took him away. I was making tea for him and he told me he would go and get biscuits. But he never returned.”
She added, “The girl used to visit him often. They were friends. We were aware that her brothers didn’t approve of their friendship and there had been tensions before. But we never imagined things would escalate to this extent.”
Himanshu’s uncle alleged, “Around 8.45pm, some boys took Himanshu to a narrow lane in the colony. One of them held him while the others stabbed him repeatedly until he bled to death. We rushed him to the hospital, but it was too late. We lost our Chiku.”
The 19-year-old former motor mechanic, who was unemployed for some time, lived with his father, a sanitation worker, his 4t-year-old mother, a housewife, and his three brothers. He also had a past history of criminal activities.
According to a police officer, the two accused claimed during interrogation that they suspected a relationship between Himanshu and their sister, which their family was not happy about. “We will verify this fact and ask the girl about it,” the officer stated.
The deceased’s family alleged that three people were involved in the crime, and the police are investigating whether a third person was involved. A case under Section 103 (murder) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita has been registered at the Gokalpuri police station. Further investigations are under way to verify the claims made by both the families.
