9-year-old wild dog dies in Delhi zoo, just one remains | Delhi News – The Times of India

New Delhi: A nine-year-old female dhole, Macchali, died at National Zoological Park on Wednesday afternoon. Officials said a postmortem would be conducted to ascertain the cause of the death.
A dhole, also known as wild dog, is a canid native to Southeast Asia. After Macchali’s death, the zoo is left with a male dhole. Macchali came to Delhi zoo from Vizag zoo as part of an animal exchange programme in 2019.
The director of National Zoological Park, Sanjeet Kumar, said the female wild dog was undergoing treatment. The range in-charge has been asked to submit a detailed report, he added.
In the past few months, Delhi zoo has seen the deaths of some animals, including a leopard, jaguar, baboon, sangai, nilgai, white tiger cub and a rhino. Zoo officials said the leopard, jaguar and the nilgai died due to old age complications.
On Jan 25, a female sangai deer died following a fight with a male sangai deer. The month also saw the deaths of a nilgai, who sustained injuries after a fight, and a one-horned rhinoceros named Dharmendra due to acute haemorrhagic enteritis, a fatal disease that causes inflammation of the intestine with bleeding. On Dec 28, 2024, a nine-month-old white tiger cub succumbed to “traumatic shock and acute pneumonia”. TNN
