AAP, BJP trade charges over councillors’ move | Delhi News – Times of India

New Delhi: Reacting to the decision of some of its councillors to break away and form a new political front, AAP blamed BJP for the defection, a charge that was vehemently refuted by the party in power. AAP claimed BJP did not have a majority in Municipal Corporation of Delhi to form the standing committee or the ward committees, and that’s why it was trying to poach opposition councillors since the mayoral polls in April.“These defections are not spontaneous, but part of a long-running strategy that BJP is now masking under false pretences. From beginning to end, this is BJP’s handiwork. The truth will come out,” AAP claimed, adding that the “manufactured exodus” was the latest chapter in BJP’s “relentless attempt to subvert the democratic mandate” in the national capital. Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva said it was “unfortunate” that “defeated and disillusioned” AAP was blaming his party for the split. “The councillors who formed a separate party have clearly stated that since the 2022 elections, AAP leaders neither focused on running the municipal administration nor tried to coordinate with them. It is clear that BJP has no involvement in the councillors’ resignation from AAP,” Sachdeva claimed. He added that AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal never allowed the formation of a standing committee, and that’s why the AAP councillors were unable to initiate any development work in their areas. “Instead of blaming BJP for their internal collapse, AAP should introspect. These 15 councillors accusing their party leadership of neglect are not the first ones. Previously, more than 15 MLAs, including three ministers, over 10 councillors and one Rajya Sabha member, accused Kejriwal of running the party without coordination and, thereby, leading it towards destruction,” Sachdeva said.MCD mayor Sardar Raja Iqbal Singh blamed “corruption and autocratic functioning” within AAP for the development. “During the 2022 municipal elections, AAP misled the public with 10 false promises, which led to their victory and subsequent control over the corporation. However, not a single promise was fulfilled, leaving the public feeling betrayed,” Singh said.Delhi Congress president Devender Yadav said AAP paid a heavy price for its “corruption and misuse of power” and was now battling an existential crisis due to Kejriwal’s “weak leadership”.
