New Delhi: Delhi Assembly will soon establish a nine-member senior citizen welfare committee to ensure the well-being of the elderly in the capital. Delhi Assembly speaker Vijender Gupta directed the secretary of the assembly to examine the feasibility of forming a committee similar to the one in Kerala. This decision followed a visit from a delegation of Kerala Assembly‘s committee for welfare of senior citizens to the Vidhan Sabha.
Delhi Assembly currently has 24 committees serving various purposes. Gupta stated that the proposed committee for senior citizens’ welfare will be established by the first week of May.
The visiting delegation members, KP Kunhammad Kutty Master, Ahammad Devarkovil, Mammikkutty P, and Job Maichil—all MLAs—shared their insights into Kerala’s senior citizen welfare rules and regulations with Delhi Assembly speaker. The panel also oversees the functioning of old-age homes managed by both state-run and private organisations, ensures the proper utilisation of govt funds allocated for senior citizens, and recommends remedial measures to address issues in policy implementation. tnn
