New Delhi: The leader of the opposition, Atishi, alleged on Monday that power cuts increased in the capital since BJP won the election and blamed the new govt for it.
The former chief minister claimed that Delhi received round-the-clock power supply under AAP govt, but the new dispensation failed to manage the power supply.
“How is it that in 10 years there were no outages, but within a month of BJP rule, power cuts are back? This means only one thing – BJP doesn’t know how to run govt. They neither have the intention nor the capability to serve the people of Delhi,” Atishi said.
Hitting back at AAP, Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva said if the national capital got 24-hour electricity supply, it was not an “extraordinary” achievement and several cities in states governed by the saffron party had uninterrupted electricity supply.
Addressing a press conference, Atishi claimed that before AAP formed govt in 2015, long power cuts were normal in the national capital. “Every household used to have inverters. But after Arvind Kejriwal became the chief minister of Delhi in Feb 2015, power cuts became history,” she added. She further cited data presented by BJP-led central govt in Rajya Sabha to say that Delhi received round-the-clock power supply under AAP govt.
“The people of Delhi do not need data because they know that for the past 10 years, their inverters were unused, and they didn’t have to change batteries. But now, after BJP formed govt in the city, power cuts are on the rise,” the former chief minister alleged.
Atishi claimed that social media was now flooded with complaints and different parts of the city reported 2-8 hours of power outages. She claimed that these were not the scheduled maintenance outages, which always come with prior notifications to affected residents. “This is a governance failure,” the Kalkaji MLA said.
Sachdeva, however, said the foundation of uninterrupted power supply was laid down in 2014 during the President’s Rule in Delhi, when the then Union finance minister Arun Jaitley presented the Delhi Budget in Parliament and the Centre allocated Rs 675 crore for new power plants and Rs 200 crore for strengthening power transformers and wires in the capital.
“It is unfortunate that Arvind Kejriwal govt, between 2015 and 2025, has only been involved in corruption under the guise of electricity supply,” Sachdeva alleged and accused the previous AAP govt of colluding with private companies to engage in electricity subsidy and PPA scams.
