New Delhi: BR Ambedkar University has issued a show-cause notice to a faculty member from the School of Global Affairs for allegedly delivering a “provocative” speech during a student protest on March 24. The protest, against the suspension of a final-year MA student, escalated into sloganeering and blocked pathways, leading to police intervention, it said.
The notice, issued on March 28, stated, “Your provocative speech encouraged the students for creating indiscipline and nuisance…The university administration was compelled to seek the intervention of police.” It accused the faculty member of disrupting academic affairs and violating Rule 3(1) of the CCS (Conduct) Rules, 1964, and Statute 22 of the university’s First Statute.
In response, the faculty member defended his speech as a constitutional right, stating, “A mere expression of an opinion cannot be equated to instigation of protest.”
The university, in a statement, maintained that “due procedures” are followed in disciplinary matters and added that “the institution prioritises academic discipline and quality while strictly adhering to established regulations and protocols.”
