New Delhi: Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Delhi Police arrested a businessman for allegedly siphoning off around Rs 30 crore from an insurance company by submitting approximately 500 fake claims over a little more than two years.
Dinesh Bansal, along with four employees of the insurance company and three external surveyors, allegedly submitted fake invoices for car repairs that were never carried out, inducing the company to make payments on fraudulent claims, according to a complaint filed by its officials.
During the investigation, EOW found several irregularities, including multiple high-value claims being filed on the same vehicle under different insurance policy numbers and names of different policyholders. They also used identical photos of the same vehicle in multiple claims.
Bansal controlled four workshops that obtained the reimbursements fraudulently. He was arrested in Samaypur Badli Industrial Area.
Two officials of the insurance company, Pradeep Rana and Deepak Sharma, were also arrested for facilitating the fraudsters. Additional CP (EOW) Amrutha Guguloth said Bansal, who initially traded in second-hand cars, opened a workshop in Swaroop Nagar. Due to poor business, Bansal devised a fraudulent scheme, leasing high-end used cars to businessmen with attractive terms.
“The scheme appealed to clients seeking a luxurious image without significant investment. Bansal exploited his contacts within the insurance company to stage two-three fake accidents per vehicle annually, claiming airbag damages worth Rs 2-4.5 lakh each,” she said. The claims were made between Feb 2019 and Aug 2021.
