New Delhi: Central Bureau of Investigation arrested a sub-inspector of Delhi Police posted at the cyber police station, Rohini, for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 2.5 lakh. The accused, Rahul Malik, was arrested on March 19.
According to CBI, a case was registered against the accused sub-inspector and other unknown people based on a written complaint. The complainant operates a tours and travels business from Mumbai and had business relations with a private company related to cash management system.
It was alleged that the complainant’s login credentials provided by the private company for virtual wallets were created under a fake name. The matter related to the private company was under investigation in an FIR lodged at the cyber police station.
Malik allegedly issued a notice to the complainant’s brother-in-law, who joined investigation. When they appeared before Malik for the probe, he threatened to arrest them.
On March 7, Malik visited the complainant’s residence in Navi Mumbai and demanded a bribe of Rs 50 lakh to clear his and his brother-in-law’s name from the case. He threatened to arrest them if the bribe was not paid.
The next day, Malik asked the complainant to meet him at a hotel on Ghodbunder Road. During the meeting, Malik again threatened the complainant and demanded a bribe by typing the amount of Rs 16 lakh on his mobile phone. Later, when the complainant and his lawyer visited the cyber police station in Rohini, Malik threatened them with consequences if the bribe was not paid. After negotiation, the accused agreed to accept a bribe of Rs 14 lakh and shared the details of the people to whom the bribe was to be delivered, the CBI said.
During further proceedings, the complainant received the details of the hawala token number and the number of the hawala operator in Mumbai to whom the bribe amount was to be given. Accordingly, on March 19, a trap was laid by CBI.
