‘Every NDMC official to engage in 1 hr shramdan before clocking in regular duties’ | Delhi News – The Times of India

New Delhi: New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has kicked off a major cleanliness campaign across Lutyens’ Delhi, mobilising teams from various departments under a detailed action plan starting Monday. This follows Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s announcement of a 20-day citywide sanitation programme aimed at improving Delhi’s residential and public spaces.
“On the direction of Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena and the chief minister, we started a citywide mega cleanliness drive as ‘Shramdan’ from Monday across all our 14 sanitation circles,” said an NDMC official. “The initiative includes all NDMC employees, from every department, participating daily. They will be joined by enthusiastic public participation,” said an NDMC official, adding that the schedule is prepared for a week.
NDMC Chairman Keshav Chandra said, “For the first time, every NDMC employee will engage in a one-hour cleanliness effort before beginning regular office duties, making it one of the largest civic sanitation campaigns ever undertaken by NDMC. With the active support of our nodal officers, the change will be visible, impactful, and lasting. This is not just a campaign; it is a citywide transformation effort.”
To ensure effective execution, 14 departmental heads have been appointed as nodal officers, each overseeing one sanitation circle. They are tasked with supervising field operations, coordinating staff, monitoring progress, and ensuring daily reporting and compliance.
The drive includes robust logistical support: 1,400 brooms, 600 kg of garbage bags, 5,000 gloves, caps, and ID badges, along with 200 banners and placards to boost awareness and visibility.
Cleanliness efforts will cover removal of garbage and malba (debris), cleaning of parks, footpaths, drains, government buildings, and places of worship. Additional activities include pruning of trees, repair of infrastructure, and repainting of public spaces to enhance New Delhi’s aesthetics.
Officials stressed strict enforcement under a zero-tolerance policy. “NDMC will also crack down on unauthorised vendors, lack of waste bins, use of single-use plastic, non-segregated waste, public littering, illegal hoardings, and property damage. Violators will face fines and FIRs, with CCTV and on-ground inspections ensuring compliance,” they said.
Public participation is central to the campaign. Residents, RWAs, market associations, students, and dignitaries are being invited to join the ‘Shramdan Movement’ through awareness sessions and community events.
NDMC teams are also conducting wet cleaning operations at major markets, including Khan Market, Sarojini Nagar, Connaught Place, and Bengali Market during night hours.
