Govt to permit ads on FOBs – The Times of India

New Delhi: Delhi govt has decided to allow advertising on around 120 pedestrian bridges to generate additional revenue for their upkeep. PWD minister Parvesh Verma said he issued directions to the engineers of the department to come up with a detailed proposal so that the extra revenue could help in better maintenance of the foot overbridges. “Many of these bridges are in poor condition, with their lifts and escalators requiring repairs. Overhead plastic roofs have cracked and discoloured,” Verma said.
Since the advertising rights on public buildings and installations are with Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Verma said a revenue-sharing model would be developed with the civic body. “We already held a meeting with the municipal commissioner. MCD will give us the no-objection certificate for the project,” he added.
The FOBs and subways have been built across the arterial roads in the city. Currently, advertising is allowed only at a few FOBs, like the one near Akshardham Temple in east Delhi. PWD officials said utilising more than 100 such facilities would bring in a lot of revenue.
PWD was pulled up by courts on several occasions for the poor condition of FOBs. Following such a stricture in 2013 by Delhi High Court, PWD set up a committee that came up with a plan for maintaining FOBs.
