Irked by DUSU prez’s antics, SRCC staff writes to DU VC – The Times of India

New Delhi: The staff association of Shri Ram College of Commerce submitted a complaint to the vice-chancellor of Delhi University about Ronak Khatri, president of Delhi University Students’ Union, allegedly misbehaving with a faculty member on campus.
The resolution on filing the complaint, passed during an emergency meeting of the association late on Wednesday, cited an altercation between Khatri and a teacher at SRCC, during which the DUSU president allegedly misbehaved with the teacher. Asking DU administration to act against Khatri, the association also demanded that the college authorities ban the entry of Khatri into the SRCC campus and to begin legal proceedings against him. The resolution will be forwarded to DU VC Yogesh Singh by the college principal.
A video posted by Khatri on social media, which has since gone viral, shows him in a confrontation with the SRCC vice-principal and a faculty member, addressing both of them in a rude manner. The incident sparked concern among faculty members, leading to a call for disciplinary action against Khatri.
Khatri denied the allegations of misbehaviour and said that the confrontation occurred after he attempted to discuss student-related issues with the vice-principal. He claimed that the vice-principal initially refused to hear him out, forcing him to speak in an assertive manner. “As DUSU president, I was contacted by hundreds of students from SRCC who expressed concern at the proliferation of stray dogs on the campus and the administration’s apathy to the problem. The administration failed to address this issue, and instead some professors and staff bullied the students who were voluntarily vaccinating and taking care of the dogs,” claimed Khatri.
The video drew sharp criticism of teachers, many of whom called on the DU administration to act against the students’ union president immediately. Delhi University Teachers’ Association president AK Bhagi demanded disciplinary action, saying that there was a “new culture of students misbehaving with teachers”. He told TOI, “DUTA has taken note of the misbehaviour of the DUSU president with teachers and condemns it. It’s a repeat offence and can’t be ignored by the administration.”
Several faculty members voiced their concerns on DUTA’s social media handle, demanding action. “Raunak Khatri (DUSU president) (sic) case is not an isolated incident. It reflects the deep rot that gripped Delhi University over the past decade — rising politicisation, erosion of institutional values and decline of professionalism,” a teacher wrote on DUTA’s handle.
Abha Dev Habib, secretary, Democratic Teachers’ Front, similarly condemned the incident. “The misconduct by the DUSU president is nothing short of vigilante justice and cannot be tolerated. Teachers cannot be subjected to this violent behaviour — for that matter, nor can any student or non-teaching employee. We cannot become a university lost to violence. Issues should be resolved through dialogue and transparent, just processes,” Habib said.
A similar incident earlier involving Khatri led the DU Executive Council, the university’s highest decision-making body, to take note and recommend action should such misbehaviour occur again. Khatri had been accused of heckling the dean of the arts faculty over delay in examinations. The showdown had resulted in the dean being hospitalised. A police complaint had been filed.
