NEW DELHI: Mystery surrounds the death of a man in Southwest Delhi’s Kapashera. Police claim that he and his friend jumped from a police vehicle and sustained injuries while being taken to the station for questioning after a weapon was recovered from them.
However, their families allege that the two men were beaten by the police, leading to the death of one in custody. A judicial inquiry was ordered in the matter.
According to the police, at around 3 pm, Head Constable Balbir Singh and Constable Nitesh noticed two men on a motorcycle behaving suspiciously. When signalled to stop, the suspects attempted to flee but were apprehended after a brief chase.
The individuals were identified as Vikas alias Majnu (28) and Ravi Sahni alias Ravi Kaliya (19), both residents of Samalka. During a personal search, one country-made pistol and a live cartridge were recovered from Vikas. The motorcycle was also seized as it was found to be stolen in a case reported in Palam Village.
The motorcycle was being driven by Ravi. A case was registered under Section 25 of the Arms Act and Section 317(2) (stolen property) of the BNS at the Kapashera police station. Both accused were medically examined following their arrest and were being transported in a govt vehicle to the police lock-up at Vasant Kunj North police station.
Deputy commissioner of police (Southwest) Surender Choudhary stated that during transit, near Vasant Kunj North police station, both accused jumped from the slow-moving vehicle while it was turning and sustained abrasion injuries. They were immediately taken to a hospital, where Ravi was declared dead.
He added that a judicial inquiry was ordered.
The families of the duo protested against the police, claiming they were tortured in custody. They alleged the two men were picked up from their jhuggis in Samalka for questioning and then beaten.
Pradeep Sahni, a relative of Ravi, said policemen came to his sister’s home and took Ravi away on the pretext of questioning. “They took him to a nearby forested area, thrashed him, then brought him to the police station, and later he was declared brought dead,” Sahni said.
Vikas’s brother, Raju, claimed that his brother was beaten by the police in an office and later in a forested area, resulting in injuries. He also alleged that police manhandled them during the protest.
