New Delhi: Delhi Police and Delhi Fire Services have geared up for Wednesday’s mega drills to assess preparedness and response to potential security threats. By simulating emergency scenarios, the drills, to be conducted at strategic locations, will test the coordination and communication among the various agencies involved, helping authorities identify areas for improvement and fine-tune their response mechanisms, officials said.Delhi Police will be using a long-range acoustic device, which is essentially a high-end public address system used to safely communicate critical instructions across a large crowd of people. “It’s different from a bullhorn or conventional loudspeakers, which disperse sound in all directions. Instead, the device is directional and can deliver clear announcements safely that people can understand, by also reducing surrounding background noise,” explained an officer. The drills may be conducted in places like Khan Market, Palika Kendra, Charak Palika Hospital, Vasant Vihar’s D-6 residential colony, T3 at Indira Gandhi International Airport, and Kendriya Vidyalaya School in Delhi Cantonment. The list of places also includes Maharishi Valmiki College of Education, Scope Minar, Kondli Market and Sahyog Apartments, officials said.A drill is scheduled to be conducted at 4 pm in Capital Green Housing Society located in Patel Nagar. “As part of the preparedness exercise, a blackout will also take place at 7 pm within the same housing society to simulate emergency response during a power outage,” the official added.Police said the exercise would consist of a coordinated drill to be conducted by multiple relevant agencies in response to a simulated incident. “The primary objective of this drill is to assess and evaluate the level of alertness, the efficiency of response times, and the effectiveness of each agency’s designated role and responsibilities at the location where the incident is assumed to have occurred,” said an officer.Security has been upped in the city after the Pahalgam attack. Police have intensified round-the-clock patrolling in key areas, including tourist hotspots and markets. Special patrol units have been deployed at strategic locations such as India Gate, Janpath and Gole Market to maintain close surveillance. Meanwhile, 64 fire stations, along with 2,400 firefighters, have been asked to remain on alert for the drill.
