New Delhi: A day after students from the Northeast staged silent protests at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) over the alleged withdrawal of the promised 75% reservation for Northeastern students in the newly inaugurated Barak Hostel, the university issued an official circular addressing the concerns.
In the circular released on Friday, dean of students clarified that while no hostel at JNU is reserved based on region or culture, priority is being given to students from Northeast in Barak Hostel allotment process. “The hostel allotment process started on April 8 in a phased manner wherein priority is given to the Northeast students in Barak Hostel. Presently, all JNU Northeastern students are residing in all JNU hostels,” it said.
It added, “JNU is a central university which promotes and maintains social integrity, multiculturalism, inclusivity, and diversity on campus.”
Earlier, Northeast Students’ Forum raised several demands. These included an immediate rollback of the current allotment list, a 75% reservation for Northeastern students in Barak Hostel. tnn
