NEW DELHI: A 55-year-old property dealer has been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run incident in RK Puram, Southwest Delhi, which killed a 34-year-old man. The accused, Rajesh Mehta, a resident of Paschim Vihar, was apprehended after police traced the vehicle involved in the accident.
The incident occurred around 10 pm on April 26, when police received a report of a collision on Ring Road, opposite a prominent hotel in Bhikaji Cama Place. The victim, initially unidentified, was rushed to AIIMS Trauma Centre, where he was declared dead.
A case was registered, and during the investigation, police discovered an Aadhaar card near the scene, identifying the victim as Mulu, a 34-year-old resident of Tikamgarh, Madhya Pradesh. His family was informed, and the body was handed over following the post-mortem.
Despite challenges due to heavy traffic and a lack of CCTV coverage, the investigation team, led by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Surendra Choudhary and SHO Ravinder Kumar Tyagi, worked tirelessly. They examined over 20 vehicles and their drivers along Ring Road.
A breakthrough came when a driver reported seeing a white car hit a pedestrian. Investigators then reviewed CCTV footage and identified a white car with a fresh dent and a partial registration number ending in ‘232.’ Tracing the vehicle’s route from Ring Road to Shiv Vihar Colony in Paschim Vihar, police confirmed the car belonged to Rajesh Mehta. Local inquiries revealed the vehicle was registered in the name of Seema Mehta, his wife, who confirmed that her husband was driving it at the time of the accident.
Rajesh Mehta admitted to hitting the pedestrian and fleeing the scene. He was arrested, and the vehicle was seized as evidence.
