New Delhi: The repair of Rohtak Road has started with the construction of the drainage along the stretch. Once this is achieved within 14 months, the road will be re-laid. The stretch between Tikri border and Nangloi metro station is used daily by lakhs of people. It also affords access because it merges with Ring Road.
Water overflowing from the drain onto the road has caused much erosion, making driving a frustrating experience. So, once the drainage is improved, residential colonies in Nangloi, Mundka, Ghevra and the Tikri area are likely to benefit. In addition, motorists on Rohtak Road between Delhi and Haryana will get relief from traffic congestion.
Having received numerous complaints from local residents about the road, PWD Minister Parvesh Verma transferred the road’s restoration from the Public Works Department to the National Highways Authority of India. “Since this project involves spots with Indraprastha Gas Limited infrastructure and three Delhi Metro stations, necessary permissions will be required. I have directed officials to expedite the approval process to avoid unnecessary delays,” said Verma. “Delays in obtaining permissions lead to increased project costs, so this should be prioritised.”
The project is expected to cost approximately Rs 115 crore. According to an internal study, the width of existing drains on this road varies from 1 metre to 1.5 metres, whereas the internal width of the proposed drain will be up to 3 metres wide.
Verma visited the affected area on Saturday and said, “Rohtak Road is in a bad condition. The road has been handed over to NHAI and PWD and Delhi govt’s irrigation & flood control department will also be working together on the project.” He claimed roads and drainage systems that will last for years will be built and the contractors will be blacklisted if compromises in quality were detected.
The minister said the poor roads contributed to rising pollution levels and assured residents that the state govt would construct durable, high-quality roads. He reassured the public that the road and drainage work would be completed within the given timeframe, ensuring smoother commutes between Delhi and Haryana.
The previous govt had also envisioned a redevelopment of the section, with plans to construct an 18km stormwater drain along Rohtak Road. However, the project was not implemented.
The entire stretch from Kirari Suleman drain near Nangloi metro station to Hiran Kudna drain is in a deplorable state due to the irregular growth of residential colonies. The presence of semi-commercial and industrial areas on both sides of the road has also contributed to the deterioration of the road. For the work to be completed on this road, PWD also has to shift some trees and move some service utility lines.
