Sewer death: NHRC, govt agencies urged to take action | Delhi News – The Times of India

New Delhi: Following the death of a sanitation worker and the hospitalisation of two others in a sewer-cleaning incident in New Friends Colony, Sunil Kumar Aledia, executive director of the Centre for Holistic Development (CHD), has written to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), the National Commission for Safai Karamcharis, and the minister, DJB demanding accountability and strict action. The letter cites a recent report that :as on 31.07.2024, out of 766 districts in the country, 732 districts have reported themselves as manual scavenging“.
The letter highlights the continued violations of the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and Their Rehabilitation Act, 2013, and the Supreme Court’s 2023 directive banning manual sewer cleaning.Aledia s tressed the need for a thorough investigation into the role of private contractors and DJB officials in the incident. The letter also urged authorities to ensure compliance with safety protocols. “Getting unsafe cleaning done is a legal offense. Accountability must be fixed to prevent further tragedies,” Aledia stated. TNN
