Shabana Azmi on ageing struggles: ‘Javed and I don’t remember anyone’s name’ | Hindi Movie News – The Times of India

Shabana Azmi, recently seen in ‘Dabba Cartel‘, shared her thoughts on aging, admitting that she and Javed Akhtar are experiencing memory challenges. She recalled on how aging feels less glamorous than it appears and emphasized the importance of sensitivity toward the elderly, likening old age to a second childhood.
Reflections on Aging
During an interview with India Today, Shabana reflected on the challenges of aging. She shared that, as creative individuals, she and Javed Akhtar are fortunate to have work to look forward to, but they are aware that their faculties, particularly memory, are gradually becoming less sharp. She admitted they often struggle to recall names.
Caring for Elderly Parents
The actress emphasized the importance of sensitivity toward the elderly. She shared her experience of caring for her mother, Shaukat Azmi, explaining how she consciously kept her involved in daily life rather than isolating her. Comparing old age to a second childhood, she remarked that it lacks glamour and urged families to accommodate the needs of aging parents with the same care shown to children.
Challenges During Relocations
She discussed the challenges elderly individuals face during relocations, noting that families often prioritize children’s well-being while neglecting the unsettling impact on aging parents. She emphasized the importance of integrating elders into daily life with dignity, recalling her father Kaifi Azmi’s frustration after a stroke left him partially paralyzed. Despite his struggles, improper assistance often caused irritation, highlighting the emotional difficulty of seeing independent parents adjust to needing help. Azmi urged a compassionate approach to elder care, likening old age to a second childhood that requires thoughtful attention and sensitivity.
Upcoming Projects
Up next, Shabana Azmi will soon be seen in ‘Lahore 1947‘, a period drama directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and starring Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta.
