New Delhi: A 200-tonne steel span with four girders has been installed on the Barapullah flyover to connect Sarai Kale Khan station with the upcoming Jangpura stabling yard on the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Namo Bharat Corridor. The Jangpura stabling yard, close to Sarai Kale Khan station, is being developed for stabling Namo Bharat trains. Since a drain flows close to the Barapullah flyover and the Namo Bharat Corridor crosses both the drain and the flyover at the same place, this steel span with four girders was installed to cross the flyover.“For the construction of the viaduct in the elevated section of the Namo Bharat corridor, pillars are usually erected at an average distance of 34 metres. However, in some complex areas where the corridor crosses rivers, bridges, rail crossings, metro corridors, expressways, or other such existing structures, it is not practically possible to maintain this distance between pillars. In such areas, steel spans are used to connect the pillars for the viaduct,” said an official of National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC).The length of the girders is 40 metres each, and the weight 50 tonnes. The four girders were installed using a two-stage lifting method involving three high-capacity cranes. To ensure minimal traffic disruption, the work was done at night.“Due to the drain flowing underneath and the Barapullah flyover above it, the steel span had to be lifted using a crane and placed directly on the designated pillars. To make it possible, the girders were lifted from the ground one by one and first placed on the road built on the flyover with the help of two cranes on one side of the Barapullah flyover. Then, by lifting the girders using two cranes on both sides of the flyover, the structures were installed on the pillars,” the NCRTC official said. The span is massive with beams of structural steel. NCRTC manufactures the segments of structural steel in the factory, and using trailers, brings them to the site at night. These parts are assembled at the site. The 4.5-km Delhi section — Sarai Kale Khan to New Ashok Nagar — is gearing up for operations. Trial runs started on April 13.
