New Delhi: AAP on Friday alleged that the national capital was facing “unprecedented” electricity cuts, a charge that was vehemently denied by power minister Ashish Sood.
AAP functionaries claimed there were no power cuts in the past 10 years, but electricity supply has deteriorated in the past one-and-a-half months. Sharing a video of people protesting against the electricity department, AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal said on X: “We set up the power system in Delhi with great difficulty, we worked very hard. And we kept an eye on it daily. There was no power cut anywhere for 10 years. These people made the power situation worse in just one-and-a-half months.”
Former deputy CM Manish Sisodia said on X that people were coming out on to the streets due to the power cuts. He wondered what would happen during peak summer in May and June. Atishi claimed that AAP govt had provided 24-hour electricity for 10 years continuously, but BJP had failed to do so.
Sood, however, said the power cut in Jagatpur Extension was a “localised and minor” incident, which was corrected. He denied any complaint of power cuts in Burari. He said BJP govt had reviewed the preparedness of all distribution companies within a month of taking over. Since Delhi’s peak electricity demand this summer was expected to reach 9,000MW, Sood said govt had assessed the power purchase agreements.
The minister said that a 24×7 control room was set up to address concerns, and there was a joint control room of transmission and distribution companies to monitor power load in real time. “This system will help identify overburdened feeders, prevent asset damage, and allow for load redistribution between feeders,” Sood said.
“As part of our commitment to ensuring uninterrupted power supply, we have asked the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission to scrutinise all power purchase agreements. This will help optimize procurement and address any inefficiencies,” he added.
Responding to AAP’s claims, Sood said there were 3,278 outages in Jan 2025. “In the last one year, there were 21,597 instances of power cuts lasting one hour or more — and you’re tweeting from Punjab, claiming there hasn’t been a single power cut in the last 10 years?” Sood wrote on X.
“21,597 outages — that’s an average of 59 power cuts every day. This is the real truth behind your fake electricity model. Kejriwal Ji, you still haven’t gotten rid of your habit of spreading fake news,” he added.
