DEHRADUN: : A day after four labourers were crushed to death and two others injured by a speeding Mercedes on Rajpur Road, police arrested 22-year-old Vansh Katyal from Dehradun ISBT on Thursday morning.
Katyal, son of a Moradabad cloth merchant, was allegedly taking his 12-year-old nephew for a joyride when he hit the victims around 8.20pm Wednesday. The SUV, moving at over 70-75 kmph, knocked down four labourers — Mansharam (30), Ranjit (35), Durgesh (30), all from Ayodhya, and Balkaran (40) from Barabanki — killing them instantly.
The two others on a scooter were injured but are stable. SSP Dehradun Ajai Singh said Katyal was sober at the time. CCTV footage and the car’s Chandigarh number plate led police to his brotherin-law, a Dehradun-based businessman, who had lent him the vehicle. It was later found abandoned on Sahastradhara Road. Katyal swerved to avoid two scooters, hitting one before running over the labourers.
After fleeing, he parked the damaged car in a vacant plot, called a friend claiming his car had a minor accident, and took a bus to Delhi. Police questioned his family, prompting him to return. A case was registered under BNS sections 105, 125, 281, and 324(4). Katyal was produced in court Thursday evening and sent to jail.
