Woman duped of Rs 1.3 lakh by man posing as late husband’s friend on social media | Delhi News – The Times of India

New Delhi: A 39-year-old woman from Malikpur in Dwarka alleged that she was duped of Rs 1.3 lakh by a man who befriended her on social media by pretending to be a friend of her late husband.
The woman approached the cyber police station in Dwarka, claiming that after her husband’s demise in 2022, she struggled with depression and began using social media for emotional support. While using a social media application, she came into contact with a person who introduced himself as “Vinay,” claiming to be her late husband’s friend and a serving officer in the Indian Army.
The complainant said the two began chatting frequently, eventually exchanging phone numbers and continuing their conversation on WhatsApp. Over time, the accused allegedly gained her trust and began asking for money, citing his mother’s illness and financial difficulties.
According to the woman, she transferred a total of Rs 1.3 lakh through a wallet and her account in multiple transactions. Once the funds were received, the man reportedly started harassing her over phone calls, pressuring her for more money and threatening to defame her. He later blocked her on social media accounts.
Realising she was duped, she filed a complaint on the national cyber crime portal and later approached the cyber cops in Dwarka. A case under Section 318(4) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita was registered.
