New Delhi: Shahdara police solved a Rs 1 crore heist within 24 hours of the incident with the arrest of the prime suspect and his accomplice. The theft took place on March 15 at the residence of businessman S Gupta.
According to DCP Prashant Gautam, Gupta had hired domestic help Nagarjun through a placement agency just three days prior to the incident. On the day of Holi, Gupta and his family left for Gurgaon, leaving Nagarjun alone at the house. Upon their return, they saw that the locks on the gate were broken and Nagarjun was nowhere to be found.
An investigation revealed that Nagarjun stole Rs 6 lakh in cash, along with gold and diamond jewellery worth around Rs 1 crore. Police registered a case under section 306 (burglary) of the BNS and launched an investigation.
A team, led by inspector Munish, analysed CCTV footage from over 100 cameras and gathered local intelligence. Their efforts paid off when Nagarjun, whose real name turned out to be Suresh Malik, was identified along with his accomplice, Rohit Kumar Malik. Raids were conducted and the two men were apprehended from Lado Sarai with the help of technical surveillance.
Cops recovered the stolen jewellery, cash and Nagarjun’s scooter, which was used in the crime.
During investigation, it was found that no police verification of the accused was done by the businessman. Nagarjun had used a fake Aadhaar card to obtain mobile phone SIM. Four SIMs used by the accused were activated on Jan 15 based on fake documents. According to police, Rohit had a previous record of involvement in similar cases and was arrested also in 2013 in a case registered at Saket police station.
Delhi Police have urged residents to get servant verification done to avoid falling prey to such incidents. Cops emphasised that the theft could have been prevented if the victim had verified the antecedents of the domestic help before hiring him.
