New Delhi: Delhi Police have filed an FIR under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against two siblings involved in a series of criminal activities, including dacoity, robbery, extortion, attempted murder, and the illicit liquor trade. On March 13, Mohan Singh, alias Monu, was arrested, while his brother and key associate, Sanjay Singh, alias Sonu, was also taken into custody.
According to police, the brothers, Monu and Sonu, members of the ‘Badhwar gang‘, built an extensive criminal empire, amassing wealth through illicit activities. Police have identified five immovable properties and 10 vehicles connected to the syndicate, and action has been initiated to seize these illegally acquired assets. “Mohan Singh and his brother Sanjay Singh executed a series of armed robberies at gunpoint, targeting both individuals and businesses. They also ran an extensive extortion racket, demanding protection money from traders and local businesses, and eliminated their rivals through targeted attacks,” said DCP (outer north) Nidhin Valsan.
During the investigation into their illicit activities, police discovered that one of their primary sources of income was the illegal liquor trade. “The gang smuggled and sold illicit liquor across the city and neighbouring states, bypassing excise regulations. Those who reported them or resisted their operations often faced violent retaliation,” DCP Valsan added.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) from the Outer North District Police tracked Mohan Singh’s movements for months. Multiple raids were conducted across suspected hideouts, with officers using advanced surveillance techniques to narrow down his location.
“After sustained efforts, he surrendered before ACP Swaroop Nagar on March 13. Following interrogation, he was formally arrested under Sections 3 & 4 of the MCOCA,” a senior police officer said. His brother, Sanjay Singh, was arrested earlier and remains in judicial custody. Additionally, another key associate, Pankaj Singh, who managed the gang’s illicit financial dealings, was also arrested, the police reported.
The police have now intensified their focus on dismantling the gang’s financial network. Along with criminal proceedings, legal action is being pursued under Sections 111 (organised crime) and 112 (petty organised crime) of BNS to target gambling, extortion, and the illicit liquor trade associated with organised crime syndicates.
So far, at least six more gang members who played significant roles in the Badhwar Gang’s operations have been identified, and further action is expected against them.
