New Delhi: Sweltering under an unrelenting blaze on Friday, Delhi recorded its hottest day of the year, with temperatures soaring to a scorching 43.3°C in the Ridge areas. Isolated heatwaves were observed across the national capital.
With the Ridge areas at 43.3 degrees Celsius, and Lodhi Road at 41.8 degrees Celsius, both five notches above normal, the areas qualified for a heatwave condition.
At Safdarjung, the city’s base station, the maximum temperature recorded was 41.7°C, four degrees above the normal, which was the highest so far this year. This marked the highest maximum for the month of April in three years, surpassing the previous high of 43.5°C on April 28, 2022.
According to the IMD, temperatures are expected to hover between 41°C and 43°C in the coming days, with a forecasted heatwave for Saturday. Sunday is expected to see temperatures between 40°C and 42°C. “A rise in maximum temperatures by about 2°C is likely over Delhi in the next two days,” said an IMD official.
The city’s air quality also worsened, moving into the poor category. The AQI stood at 258, up from 227 the previous day. Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology forecasts that the air quality will improve to moderate levels by April 27. TNN
