Discoms told to gear up to provide record 9k MW this summer | Delhi News – The Times of India

New Delhi: Delhi is expected to hit a record power demand of 9,000 MW this summer, surpassing last year’s peak of 8,656 MW, according to estimates from the State Load Dispatch Centre. To ensure a steady supply, the Delhi government has directed distribution companies (discoms) to strengthen the power network and implement AI-driven forecasting for efficient power management.
Govt officials said that discoms have been told that Delhi’s power demand typically peaks in late June or early July, with the exception being last year when it peaked in August. Discoms should be prepared for such situations during this time, they said. The increased demand is attributed to weather conditions that prompt residents to use more air conditioning and cooling appliances, leading to higher electricity consumption.
Electricity distribution in Delhi is handled by discoms such as BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL), BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL), Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL), and New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC). A BSES official said the company is taking various measures, including network upgrades and thermo-scanning to identify potential hotspots. “More than 2,100 MW of green power will be crucial to meeting the demand during the summer,” the official added.
Last year, Delhi’s peak power demand exceeded 8,000 MW for the first time. Discom officials explained that they use advanced statistical forecasting models, paired with AI and machine learning, to predict power needs. “These analytics help us build models, which lead to high accuracy planning and huge saving of man-hours,” he said.
Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL) has arranged for up to 2,850 MW of power through long-term, medium-term, and short-term agreements. The utility projects that peak demand will reach 9,000 MW in late June or early July, as Delhi braces for scorching temperatures this year.
According to the IMD forecast, northeast India will experience above-normal temperatures this summer. Last year, TPDDL’s area saw a peak demand of 2,481 MW. “TPDDL is fully prepared to ensure uninterrupted supply through bilateral agreements, reserve shutdowns, and power exchanges,” the company said, adding that it has deployed advanced forecasting techniques for greater accuracy.
