NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has directed the Central Empowered Committee to investigate claims of an embankment being constructed on the Yamuna River near Kalesar Wildlife Sanctuary in Haryana, allegedly to enable mining activities. The matter was heard by Justices B R Gavai and Augustine George Masih on April 29, following concerns that the river’s flow was being diverted from Haryana to Uttar Pradesh.Advocate Gaurav Kumar Bansal, representing the applicant, presented the case before the court, asserting that the embankment was built to facilitate rampant mining operations near the wildlife sanctuary.“We, therefore, find that it would be appropriate that the Central Empowered Committee (CEC) examines the issues and submit its report,” the bench stated in its order. The CEC, established by the Supreme Court’s May 2002 order, is responsible for monitoring the implementation of court directives related to encroachment removals, working plans, compensatory afforestation, plantations, and other conservation matters. The court has instructed the applicant’s counsel to provide copies of the application to advocates representing Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, allowing them to respond to the allegations made in the plea. The case has been scheduled for further hearing in the last week of May.The Kalesar Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the eastern region of Yamunanagar district in Haryana.
