Jaya Bachchan recenlty criticized the title of Akshay kUmar’s film, ‘Toilet: Ek Prem Katha‘, saying she would never watch such a film. She questioned its appeal and called it a flop. She also remarked that political parties are now making films. Her statement has sparked backlash online.
Made on a Rs 75 crore budget, Toilet: Ek Prem Katha became a massive hit, earning Rs 311.5 crore globally. Inspired by a true story, it raised awareness about sanitation and open defecation. Aligned with the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, it contributed to building 60 million toilets, leading to India’s open-defecation-free status in 2019.
After Jaya Bachchan questioned the film’s title at the India TV event, many fans responded by emphasizing its social impact and box office success in the comments.
While one user wrote, ‘Toilet was a really good movie though! It brought awareness to a topic that’s rarely spoken about in public and Akshay was very funny in it. It was a hit too I think’, another one added, ‘How ridiculous. That movie was a great message of the troubles of women in India surviving in a villages. People like her have luxurious life and talk.Akshay did a great job.’
Meanwhile, one user also commented, ‘Isko poocho uske bete Abhishek ki movie kitne log dekhne jate hai ek bhi haaath nahi uthega’. Another one added, ‘Jaya Bachchan says nobody will watch movies with name like Toilet Ek Prem Katha, Padman. Collections: Toilet ek prem katha- 216 crore, Padman- 191 crores. Much more than movies of Abhishek. Btw Amitabh Bachchan made a movie Piku where all he talked about was Toilet.’
