The sound of the dhol is enough to get anyone’s feet taping. With Baisakhi approaching, the city is alive with festive energy. If you haven’t yet figured out how to celebrate, why not sign up for a bhangra or gidda workshop and join in the fun?
Live dhol bhangra workshops are a big hit’
The joy of dancing to live dhol is unmatched, say bhangra instructors. Hardeep Singh, a bhangra trainer from West Delhi, shares, “For Baisakhi, we are doing live dhol workshops where participants learn bhangra to the beats of the ustaad’s dhol. Another workshop involves a set choreography on songs like Ashke by KS Makhan.”
He adds, “While some attend workshops for fitness purposes, as bhangra is the best cardio, others come to experience the joy of dancing. Baisakhi is a good time to start learning the folk dance form.”

These workshops also offer a glimpse into the history of bhangra. Harsimran Singh, a bhangra trainer and coach of SGTB Khalsa College’s Girls Folk Dance Society, shares, “Live dhol bhangra workshops are a hit. People register for the workshops based on the song and choreography, and live dhol allows them to do masti and be more spontaneous. The workshop offers a peek into bhangra’s roots, how it was a blend of various folk dances in pre-Partition Punjab, and its global appeal.”

‘A deep cultural experience’
Bhangra instructor Sachleen Singh shares, “The bhangra scene in Delhi has evolved from just a workout routine to a deeper cultural experience. With retro and folk songs leading the way, people reconnect with the true essence of the dance.” Nazm Kaur, a bhangra and gidda trainer, says, “With the popularity of Punjabi music, more people are getting drawn to these dance forms. Bhangra workshops are more trending than gidda workshops, as the former can be performed by both genders.”

“Since Baisakhi is around the corner, I’m getting a lot of queries for one-day workshops,” shares bhangra and gidda trainer Nazm Kaur
