Jainism played invaluable role in building India’s identity, says PM Narendra Modi on Navkar Mahamantra Divas | Delhi News – The Times of India

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said Jainism has played an invaluable role in building India’s identity, asserting that its values offer an answer to the global challenges of terrorism, war and environmental protection.
At an event commemorating ‘Navkar Mahamantra Divas‘, Modi highlighted his administration’s dedication to safeguarding Jainism’s legacy and teachings.
He noted the religion’s influence, including tirthankaras’ teachings and idols, visible on Parliament’s structure.
He discussed anekantavada, a fundamental Jain principle promoting non-absolutism and acknowledging multiple perspectives of truth. He emphasised its relevance in today’s world for appreciating diverse viewpoints.
Modi emphasised how Jainism acknowledges life’s interconnectedness, hence prohibiting violence in any form. He stated this provides valuable lessons for maintaining peace, harmony and environmental conservation.
Speaking about Jain literature’s significance in India’s spiritual heritage, Modi outlined various governmental initiatives, including the digitalisation of ancient texts and the recognition of Pali and Prakrit as classical languages.
Modi proposed nine commitments: water conservation, tree planting in mothers’ memory, maintaining cleanliness, supporting local products, domestic tourism, adopting natural farming methods, pursuing healthy living through millet consumption and reducing cooking oil usage by 10 per cent, assisting the underprivileged, and incorporating sports and yoga.
He encouraged the attendees to spread unity’s message nationwide and welcome those who proclaim “Bharat mata ki jai”.
