Jay North, Iconic ‘Dennis the Menace’ Star, Passes Away at 73 | – The Times of India

The world of entertainment has lost yet another talented star. Jay North, who became a household name after playing the young mischief maker in the 1959 comedy series ‘Dennis the Menace,’ has passed away. The actor who left an impression on millions of hearts breathed his last at 73.
North passed away on Sunday at his home in Lake Butler, Florida. He was battling with colon cancer for many years now, his co-star Jeannie Russell told The Hollywood Reporter. She called him her “otherworldly brother.”

‘Dennis the Menace’

‘Dennis the Menace’ was based on the comic strip by Hank Ketcham, and North portrayed the well-meaning yet mischievous Dennis Mitchell. This character was the sole child of Henry (Herbert Anderson) and Alice (Gloria Henry). Dennis frequently caused upheaval for his retired neighbor, George Wilson, and later for his brother, John Wilson (Gale Gordon).
North was only 6 when he first auditioned for the famous role. When the show finally aired in October 1959, he was 8. Time flew at such a pace that the child actor was only 12 when the series was canceled after four seasons. However, the reruns of the show made him garner love and appreciation even after the show was over.
According to The Hollywood Report, in an interview given by North in 1993, the actor expressed he was not happy when the series came to an end. “Between the pressures of the business and Joe’s dying, I became very serious, very morbid, and very withdrawn from the world. I was the antithesis of the little kid that I played on the television show,” he said.
In addition to ‘Denis The Menace,’ North was seen in ‘Zebra in the Kitchen’ (1965), directed by Ivan Tors, and in the India-set adventure ‘Maya’ (1966).
Though the actor has left the mortal world, his legacy will keep him alive in millions of hearts, and his work will inspire generations to come.
