Notorious criminal absconding for seven years held | Delhi News – The Times of India

New Delhi: A criminal who was absconding for the last seven years fell in the net of Delhi Police’s Crime Branch recently.
Amit was sentenced to seven years in prison for his involvement in an armed robbery in 2001, where he and his associates looted Rs 4 lakh at gunpoint from a petrol pump owner in Delhi Cantt. However, after securing bail, he went into hiding in 2017.
Police said Amit had a history of criminal activities with 36 cases registered against him, including robbery, snatching, theft, and violations of the Arms Act. He consistently changed his identity and location to avoid being caught by law enforcement agencies.
“As part of a special operation against fugitive criminals, a special team was formed that used both manual surveillance and technical intelligence to track Amit’s movements. After extensive efforts, we confirmed that he was last spotted in the Hari Nagar and Tilak Nagar areas of west Delhi,” DCP (crime) Aditya Gautam said.
“During their investigation, the police team discovered that Amit was a food enthusiast and frequently visited a popular food stall in Tilak Nagar. Acting on a tip-off, the team laid a trap in the area and successfully apprehended him at the stall,” the DCP added.
During interrogation, Amit disclosed that he was a permanent resident of south Delhi’s Dakshin Puri, Delhi and that he remained an active member of a gang from 1999 to 2013 and executed a series of serious crimes along with gang members. “He further disclosed that after getting bail, he continued his criminal activities and remained involved in a series of cases of robbery, snatching, thefts, etc., along with his associates,” another police officer said.
Amit has now been handed over to jail authorities, and legal proceedings are underway.
