Solar energy dominates power play; promise to clear overhead cable web | Delhi News – The Times of India

New Delhi: The power department was allocated Rs 3,847 crore in the 2025-26 Delhi budget presented on Tuesday by chief minister Rekha Gupta, who stressed Delhi govt’s commitment to providing 24-hour uninterrupted electricity supply to all residents.
Gupta said Delhi govt will sign an MoU with the ministry of new and renewable energy to implement the ‘PM Surya Ghar: Free Electricity Scheme’, under which residential consumers in Delhi will receive a subsidy of up to Rs 78,000 for solar energy installations.
Another new initiative, ‘PM Surya Ghar: Free Electricity Scheme – State Top Up’, proposed with a Rs 50-crore budget, aims to equip 2.3 lakh residential rooftops with solar energy over the next three years, said CM.
The ‘PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGMBY)’, an initiative launched by PM Modi in Feb 2024, recently achieved the milestone of 10 lakh solar-powered homes, as of March 10 this year, said Gupta. According to Centre, the scheme has so far received over 47.3 lakh applications and govt has disbursed over Rs 4,770 crore in subsidies to 6.13 lakh beneficiaries.
As per the budget proposal, discoms and the power/energy departments will be required to put in place several facilitative measures to promote solar rooftops in their areas, such as the availability of net meters, timely inspection and commissioning of installations, vendor registration, and management.
Govt also plans to remove the web of overhead cables across Delhi. “Overhead electricity wires not only deface the beauty of the city, but are also risky from the security point of view. Therefore, my govt has proposed the shifting of transmission lines, for which a budget of Rs 100 crore has been allocated,” said Gupta.
“All overhead cables will be laid underground, making Delhi a more secure, cleaner and modern city,” she said, adding, “Delhi is now on its way to becoming an energy-smart city, where every home will be illuminated, every industry will flourish, and the future will be brightened by green energy.”
