Wind brings relief from heat, city AQI also improves | Delhi News – The Times of India

New Delhi: The city on Friday experienced strong and cool north-westerly winds reaching up to 30 kmph in some areas, which improved air quality within poor levels and brought the daytime temperature down by four degrees Celsius. The maximum temperature was recorded 32.3 degrees Celsius, which is normal for the season, compared to 36.4 degrees a day earlier. However, the minimum temperature increased to 20.9 degrees Celsius, three notches above normal, compared to 19.5 degrees a day earlier.
According to the weather department, the maximum temperature on Saturday may hover around 32-34 degrees Celsius. “The temperature was low due to strong north-westerly winds, which are cool because of rain and snowfall in the regions of Pakistan and beyond. Winds will dry up from April 1 onwards, and that is when the temperatures will begin to rise,” said Mahesh Palawat from Skymet. According to IMD, the maximum temperatures may increase to 34-36 degrees by Sunday and 35-37 by Monday.
The city previously recorded its highest maximum temperature of the year at 38.9 degrees Celsius on Wednesday. A day earlier, on Tuesday, the maximum temperature was recorded at 37.1 degrees Celsius, now the second highest of the month. On Friday, the base weather station at Safdarjung recorded strong surface winds up to 15 kmph, with chances of occasional gusty winds up to 35 kmph.
Meanwhile, the air quality index (AQI), on a scale of 0 to 500, was 205 on Friday. “The air quality is likely to be in the moderate category from March 29 to March 31,” stated the Air Quality Early Warning System for Delhi, the forecasting body under the Union Ministry of Earth Sciences. The Commission for Air Quality Management had imposed Stage I of GRAP on Monday in NCR after AQI reached poor levels.
