Woman posing as a doctor arrested for thefts in AIIMS hostel – The Times of India

New Delhi: A 43-year-old woman, posing as a doctor, was caught on Thursday at her residence in Ghaziabad for allegedly stealing gold jewellery and money from the doctors’ hostel in AIIMS.
The woman, who has a diploma in medical laboratory technology, frequently commuted from Ghaziabad to AIIMS in south Delhi. She allegedly used to put on a doctor’s coat and roam in the hospital and hostels, stealing valuables from unlocked rooms.
According to the police, her fondness for expensive jewellery drove her to steal. The police got a complaint from a doctor who said that gold jewellery, Rs 20,000, and 700 Malaysian Ringgit was stolen from his room in an AIIMS hostel. A case was registered and a team under sub-inspector Deepender was formed.
The team collected CCTV footage from 100 cameras on the AIIMS campus and analysed it. They gathered inputs from technical sources, purified these inputs and extracted even more important information through both manual and technical surveillance.
“From the analysis of CCTV footage, the team managed to identify a woman wearing a doctor’s white coat roaming inside the hostel gallery,” a police source said. The suspect was found trying to open different rooms at odd hours. The suspect’s steps were traced throughout the campus, and footage from multiple CCTV cameras was checked. She was seen riding her scooter on the campus too.
The team deployed plain-clothes officers all over the campus to gather more intelligence on the woman. The scooter’s ownership details were obtained from the department concerned. A search was done in Ghaziabad, and the suspect was apprehended.
Police found jewellery, including two gold chains, a ring, earrings, a bracelet, Rs 4,500 in cash, 522 Malaysian Ringgit, and the scooter.
Deputy commissioner of police (south) Ankit Chauhan said the woman had committed thefts earlier too. While roaming on the AIIMS campus, she noticed that the doors of the hostel rooms were generally left unlocked.
“At that time, she decided to steal…. To avoid the suspicion of security guards or others, she wore a doctor’s coat. After committing the theft, she fled on her scooter,” he said. “The woman claimed that her husband lost his job six or seven months ago, so to fulfil her desire, she started committing crimes. She claimed to have committed a similar crime in 2023, which will be investigated,” police said.
The woman also has a bachelor’s degree in science and worked as a lab assistant in a private hospital.
